Chapter One
The Graveyard was not the place Mark Braden thought he’d breathe his last. He was sure he’d die in the pine forest of Savage Territory, chasing a drug-runner and getting hit by a spray of bullets.
Instead, he’d been ambushed.
He lay face down on the hard, rocky ground. Blood streamed from a deep gash in his skull and pooled in the debris beneath him. The rogue wolves kicked him, but he barely registered the blows anymore. One or two of his ribs had snapped and punctured his left lung. He had a deep stab wound in his abdomen. His heart felt like a bird fluttering wildly in his chest, nothing more.
The Graveyard was a cess-pit, a central place in Five Bridges used for dumping bodies at night. In the morning, Tribunal clean-up crews would arrive to cart off the dead, catalog them with unfailing carelessness, then send them to the crematory.
“He’s gone.” Ely Gammet, a powerful warlock, stood over him. The bastard had been one of six who’d drawn him to the Graveyard with the promise of information about his wife’s killers.
A few more kicks, and the crew started walking away. He had a dim view of their boots and heard the crunch through the loose rocks. Braden flared his nostrils to take in the warlock’s scent. He catalogued it in his shifter brain for future recall.
He almost laughed. What future?
His breaths were shallow now, small jolts of air he brought into lungs that barely worked anymore.
Maybe it was for the best...

A rigged horserace and a marriage offer riding on the outcome. When Miss Eliza Montrose unexpectedly becomes legal owner of the horse tipped to win the East Anglia Cup, her future is finally in her hands – but at what cost?

George Bramley, nephew to the Earl of Quamby, will wager anything. Even his future bride.
Miss Eliza Montrose will accept any wager to be reunited with the child she was forced to relinquish after an indiscretion — even if it means marrying a man she does not love.
But with her heart suddenly engaged by handsome, charming Rufus Patmore who has just bought a horse from her betrothed George Bramley in whose household her son lives as a pauper child, the outcome of the wager is suddenly fraught with peril.
**This is book 3 in the Scandalous Miss Brightwells series, though it can be read as a stand-alone.
~*~*~*~*~*~
Excerpt:
This excerpt begins after Eliza has just plunged into the lake to rescue three drowning children and their nanny. Having dragged them – and herself – to shore, she makes a shocking discovery.
Chapter Two
Eliza had forgotten what it felt like to enjoy a man’s attention. He’d started to dry her in a vigorous attempt to warm her but then his touch gentled and he simply stared down at her.
The wonder in his eye as he murmured words of praise was a rare sensation. Embarrassed, she turned away. Yes, turned away because she could not afford to be so obviously disquieted by another man when she was affianced to George Bramley who stood a few feet away from her. He was also staring but there was no softness in his countenance.
Hoping to avoid any more gestures of admiration or kindness from Mr Patmore, Eliza politely extricated herself and put out her hand to arrest the progress of the Foundling Home lad whom Nanny Brown was pursuing with a piece of dry linen.
His impish grin reminded her of young Miss Katherine’s, Lady Fenton’s daughter. Clearly the two had had a great adventure unlike Young George who was lying on his stomach upon the grass, shaking with sobs.
“Did you drink a lot of water, Young George?” Eliza asked, looking down at the crying boy but he ignored her. “I said we shouldn’t go out! I said!” He pounded his fists. “No one ever listens to what I say!”
Eliza shared a wry smile with the rather lovely Mr Patmore whom she found still staring at her but, as he looked about to approach her again, she turned her back on him and instead brought the Foundling Home boy to stand in front of her now that she’d succeeded in catching him. Eliza would not have Mr Bramley – or anyone else – accuse her of encouraging the attentions of a man not her betrothed.
“Jack – that’s your name, isn’t it? Well, you’ll have something to tell them back at the Foundling Home.” She’d seen him only from a distance and now, mud bespattered and with his hair matted over his forehead it was difficult to make out his features though she knew from various anecdotes that young Jack distinguished himself for keeping Miss Katherine’s wilfulness in check and peace between Katherine and her cousin, Young George.
Jack stood obediently before her as he started to wring out his threadbare shirt. “Nah, I’m fine, m’lady,” he said, glancing up to reveal a pair of small white teeth in a freckled face. “But thanks for savin’ me, an’ all.”
Eliza was about to let him go. Releasing her grip a second later might have changed the course of her life, she thought later that evening, and perhaps it would have been better if she had. Why repeat the trauma she’d already experienced?
But for now she was acting on instinct and instead of letting him go when it would have seemed natural, her grip on his wrist tightened while the air in her lungs disappeared, and she had to open and close her eyes three times before she was ready to believe what she saw.
“Gideon?” There seemed still no air to say his name. A great pressure was building in her head. Finally she was able to gasp in a breath, forcing herself to resist the urge to draw him into her embrace and wail her joy.
And pain.
How many other boys of seven years sported a tiny extra claw on their left hand? Or had been thrust into the cold, unloving world of the Foundling Home, she thought bitterly.
He stopped what he was doing to look at her uncomprehendingly and she added faintly, “Though that’s not what they call you, of course.”
An amused look crossed his face, making him look older and wiser than his seven years. Nearby, the weeping and wailing George was a puling infant. Smiling at her was a little man.
He pushed out his chest and said in a tone that was neither boastful nor self pitying, “There’s some ‘at call me Devil’s Cub, or bastard, but at the manor here they call me Jack.”
Devil’s Cub? The sixth finger accounted for the nickname, of course.
“Miss Montrose?” In the distance, Lady Fenton was calling her. Eliza was suddenly shaking like one suffering the ague. “Jack,” she repeated in a whisper, still staring at him as she clenched her own fists. Was the child tormented by his deformity? It looked as if not much troubled him though Eliza couldn’t remember how many times Eliza had been told the sixth finger was God’s punishment upon her bastard babe.
“Miss Montrose! Come away! Susan is waiting in the house with a warm bath and blankets. You must be chilled to the bone!”
Vaguely, she could hear the sounds of concern all around her but all Eliza could focus on was the impish face before her: that of her lost child.

Beverley Oakley was seventeen when she bundled up her first her 500+ page romance and sent it to a publisher. Unfortunately drowning her heroine on the last page was apparently not in line with the expectations of romance readers so Beverley became a journalist.
Twenty-six years later Beverley was delighted to receive her first publishing contract from Robert Hale (UK) for a romance in which she ensured her heroine was saved from drowning in the icy North Sea.
Since 2009 Beverley has written more than thirteen historical romances, mostly set in England during the early nineteenth century. Mystery, intrigue and adventure spill from their pages and if she can pull off a thrilling race to save someone’s honour – or a worthy damsel from the noose – it’s time to celebrate with a good single malt Scotch.
Beverley lives with her husband, two daughters and a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy the size of a pony opposite a picturesque nineteenth century lunatic asylum. She also writes Africa-set adventure-filled romances tarring handsome bush pilot heroes, and historical romances with less steam and more sexual tension, as Beverley Eikli.

Excerpt:
“Maybe, one can hope it is just a motivational tool, but I doubt it. Soon, all eligible female shifters in Europe will descend on Moscow. If I am not mated with one within a lunar cycle, then father might be the last ruler of our line. That’s the future, the future I came here to forget. Until then, well the DC clubs better watch out.” Mikhail smirked.
Kevin entered the room with a hesitant smile. “Didn’t mean to eavesdrop, mates, but I was just walking by. I don’t mean to be presumptuous, either, but if you want, Mikhail, Rachel and I can take you to a club we like to go to. I have a feeling it might be right up your alley. It's members only and a bit kinky. What do you say? It could be a lot of fun.”
“Are you kidding me? Kink is my middle name. When do we go?” Mikhail smiled.
“As soon as we change. Put on something nice and sexy.” Kevin winked at him before turning to leave. Mikhail wondered if the man was flirting with him.
As he stared at the spot where Kevin had just disappeared, Anna came back into the room. “What is Kev smiling about? And why do you have a matching smirk, Mikhail? Are you two up to something?”
“He and Rachel just invited Mikhail out to go with them to their private club,” Alexander answered with a knowing stare.
A look of understanding dawned in her eyes. “Ah. So you are just as wild as my friends? Well, try to not get in too much trouble. Lord knows that Kevin and Rachel are going to do their best to lure you into some.” She winked at him, then turned to Alexander. “I guess us boring people should go to bed. No one else in this house will be getting up to help with the baby tomorrow morning.”
“Too right.” Alexander laughed.
“Just what kind of club is this?” Mikhail said to himself as he went to change, anticipation running through his veins.

New Release: My Sexy Veterinarian by Bonnie Phelps

Nate Kincaid, wants to get out of debt and get his family off his back about his relationship status. The second means he needs a serious girlfriend, but after the death of his fiancĂ©, he isn’t ready. No one knows about his nightmares—the ones that chase him into the dark places of grief. Dealing with debt means his fledgling veterinary practice must be successful—business before anything else. Always. Maybe a pretend relationship would solve his second problem so he can concentrate on the first.

Full-time psychologist and part-time model, Lauren Royall, has the perfect life. As a therapist she helps people. As a model, her free spirit reigns. When Nate suggests she pose as his girlfriend, she accepts on a lark. Lauren senses his pain and wants to help. She hadn’t counted on falling for the guy or the painful memories from her past his situation evokes.

 Excerpt
“You’re a walking contradiction. One of you brings me flowers and the other turns his back on me. One minute I think you like me and the next I feel like a leper.” She took a breath and plunged ahead. “Are you playing some kind of game?”

“No, no games. Gun shy, maybe. Getting too close to a woman can open a man up to a world of hurt.”

“And you’ve been there, done that?” His expression closed and she immediately missed the carefree man he’d been before she’d hit whatever nerve had made him flinch. She wanted that relaxed man back.

“Yeah, but I’m not ready to talk about it.”

“Fair enough. What would you like to talk about? It’s a beautiful day. We’ve enjoyed each other’s company. I’d like to keep it that way.” She’d find a way to tease out happy Nate or die trying.

“Well I do have something on my mind. A problem you might be able to help me solve.”

He had the look of a fox approaching the hen house. He wanted what was inside, but wasn’t sure what might be lying in wait. She put a smile in her voice to put him at ease. “I’m listening.”

“My family’s been bugging me about finding a steady girlfriend. They seem to think I’m afraid to get serious about anyone.” He picked up one of the containers and lifted the lid.

“Are you afraid of getting involved?” She didn’t expect him to open up but thought it was worth a shot.

He sniffed the contents of the container and put it back down. “No, just haven’t found anyone I want to date on a steady basis.”

He swallowed hard and looked away. Nate was lying, What part was the lie—that he hadn’t found anyone he wanted to date or that he was afraid to get involved?

“What can I do to help you solve your problem?” she asked.

“I was thinking, maybe you and I could date, like we’re a couple, so my family would back off.”

A spark of annoyance flickered in her chest. He wanted people to think they were a couple but didn’t really want to be a couple. “Let me see if I understand. We’d date. We’d pretend to be serious about each other but it’d really be casual?”

“About sums it up.” He ran a hand through his hair. “I like you. I think we have fun together and when my family decides I’m not avoiding having a serious girlfriend, we can still be friends. You interested?”

“We do have fun together and since we’re both concentrating on our careers, a serious relationship isn’t something either of us needs.” She stuck out her hand. “You’ve got a deal.”

Rumor has it that Bonnie Phelps began telling stories at a very early age. Photos exist of the author toddling around the corner of the house covered in mud babbling about magic rabbits leading her through the garden. Her parents were amused – until they discovered she had also walked across the newly poured cement patio – which only added fuel to the fire of her passion for writing. From then on, her active imagination continued to churn out plots and character sketches always wondering how different people would behave in similar situations. People are endlessly fascinating and stories are everywhere.

Bonnie used her writing skills throughout her professional life as a fundraiser and marketer for several nonprofits. She enjoyed the chance to tell and share the story of worthy organizations. In the late 1980s, Bonnie authored a syndicated column in several California newspapers in which she shared the experiences and misadventures of life as a wife and mother. The jury is out on whether or not her children appreciated her candor. Because Bonnie has romance in her soul, she also worked as a Wedding Planner for several years. Absolutely loved it!! She craves anything sweet, revels in any chance to travel, and is addicted to Ancestry.com. A native Californian, the author lives in Northern California with her husband.

Dan Rothberg struggled after an accident killed his wife and he nearly lost custody of his daughter. He can no longer allow himself to get attached to anything or anyone. Until he meets Hannah.

Hannah Cohen is a young executive with a meddlesome grandmother and a troubled brother. She’d like nothing better than to find her own Mr. Right, after too many Mr. Wrongs. A sexy older man with a teenage daughter was never in her plans.

As they navigate their relationship through adolescent attitudes and grandmotherly interference, they realize age is just a number and love can be right in front of them. But when the terrible truth of Dan’s former struggles is exposed, Hannah must decide if she can get past his deception and allow love to conquer all.

Excerpt:
Monday, time dragged. Hannah half expected to hear the numbers of the clock scrape against the floor, creating ruts in the blue industrial carpet. The press release she was writing, discussing the goals of her client’s new CEO, was stuck on line three. She’d sit down to write, and remember she needed a cup of coffee. So she’d go and get coffee, sit and be too warm. She’d adjust the thermostat and realize she should make sure her hair wasn’t frizzy, since she didn’t want Dan to see her look like the Wild Woman of Borneo. She’d return once again to the computer, and be too cold. Lunch could not come fast enough.

Finally, finally, finally, lunchtime rolled around. Hannah grabbed her purse and raced to the bathroom. After she fixed her makeup and hair, she walked to the Piccolo Café. As she approached the restaurant, she spotted him waiting on the sidewalk. Khakis with a razor-sharp crease fit him better than any she had seen before, and a flash of his sexy rear flitted through her head. A blue button-down Oxford, the exact color of his eyes, stretched across his broad shoulders and managed not to look rumpled after a half day of work. Silver- flecked hair glinted in the sun and a strong hand gripped his cane. The brown wood looked bronze in the sun, and for the first time, she noticed grooved cutouts along the shaft, which added some artistry to it. He met her gaze and waved, a half smile on his face, as he shifted his weight and pulled at his collar.

For some reason, his nerves calmed her. She exhaled, blew a strand of hair out of her face, and hurried to meet him. “Hi, sorry if I kept you waiting.”

“I was early.”

For her. Her stomach lurched and she pressed her hand against her middle to settle it.

He rested his hand on her upper arm. “Want to go inside?”

Warmth radiated from her arm to her fingertips. This close to him, she could smell his shampoo and a faint trace of his aftershave, and she wanted more time to figure out what those specific scents were. But they were in the middle of the sidewalk, and now was not the time to sniff.

Not to mention, she would look weird.

He ushered her indoors, and they followed the hostess to a table in the back of the rustic-looking dining room, his gait a little uneven as he limped.

“How’s your day so far?” he asked when the hostess left.

“I’m glad lunch is finally here.”

“Me too.” His face reddened and he smiled, not holding her gaze for long, but long enough for her to admire his handsome grin. “The morning took much longer than I thought it would.”

She wrinkled her nose. “I thought it was just me.”

He shook his head. “I swear someone snuck into my office last night and slowed all the clocks. Every time I looked, a few minutes passed, although it felt like longer, and every time the phone rang, I jumped.”

“Why?”

He played with the edges of his menu for a moment, and she wondered what those fingers would feel like on her. When he refocused his gaze on her, her face heated and she took a deep breath. “Restaurant burned down,” he said, “every road in the city closed, it’s been a while since I’ve been on a date...I don’t know.”

She leaned forward with a smile. “Look at us. We made it.”

“I’m glad.” He touched her hand for a moment, his fingers strong, and a shiver ran up her arm. His words might be tentative, but his touch was warm, strong and sure. His piercing blue eyes honed in on her and made it impossible to look away. His eyebrows were still dark, unlike his hair, which gave him a foreboding appearance, but when he smiled, his mouth stretched, drawing attention to his soft lips, adding a vulnerability to his features and making her wonder what it would be like to kiss him. Would his kiss be soft and gentle or sure, in a take-no-prisoners kind of way? What would he taste like? Warmth pooled low in her belly as a desire to find out the answers to those questions blossomed.

Jennifer Wilck started telling herself stories as a little girl when she couldn’t fall asleep at night. Her favorite stories to write are those with smart, sassy, independent heroines; handsome, strong and slightly vulnerable heroes; and her stories always end with happily ever after.

In the real world, she’s the mother of two amazing daughters and wife of one of the smartest men she knows. When she’s not writing, she loves to laugh with family and friends, is a pro at finding whatever her kids lost in plain sight, and spends way too much time closing doors that should never have been left open. She believes humor is the only way to get through the day and doesn’t share her chocolate.

She writes contemporary romance, some of which are mainstream and some of which involve Jewish characters. All are available through Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
